The member representing Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya on Monday kicked off the distribution of rice palliatives to different groups of people in the constituency, with the committee saying it would share at least 1,200 (50kg) bags of rice to 6,000 (10kg each) constituents across Ilorin West/Asa Federal constituency.
In what was an attempt to ensure nonpartisanship, fairness and equity, recall that Honourable Muktar Shagaya has earlier called for stakeholders’ engagement ahead of the distribution of the Federal Government palliative to constituents.

At the flag off of the distribution in his constituency office in Ilorin, Honourable Shagaya said the palliatives are only a show of empathy with the people as more sustainable initiatives are being implemented in phases. Adding that, it is also a show of solidarity to the commitment of His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. Shagaya was represented by the Constituency Manager, Alhaji Muftau Akanbi Oke.

He said: “We had engaged with the critical stakeholders in the constituency to inform them about receiving the bags of rice and to discuss on the modalities of sharing the food items. This is only a fraction of what we have done to identify with the people at this very critical moment of our national life. Palliatives are a temporary measure to ease the effects of rising costs, the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy on the most vulnerable among us.
Away from misconceptions that some of us had hoarded it, we have just received ours. Yet, we acknowledge the limits of this distribution in terms of the reach.
Beneficiaries were identified on a nonpartisan basis. We have continued to consult with different blocs of our communities as well as evidence-based registers of vulnerable people domiciled with key agencies of government. Distribution will be done in accordance with the timetable and logistics of the committee.

For us, the true value of today’s event is not in the number of bags of rice distributed or the size of the relief effort. The most significant thing is the compassion that drives our actions. The government at all levels empathizes with the people who are struggling in these difficult times. We’re dedicated to doing everything in our power to support the people and make this challenging period a bit easier. We’ll keep working to make a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most.

This initiative also demonstrates our support for the efforts of His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, to improve the lives of the people of Kwara State. We are proud of him in his mission to make a positive difference in the lives of our constituents. We are grateful for his vision and leadership, and we look forward to working together to make our state a better place for all.

The beneficiaries of the palliative, including Persons living with disabilities; Market-men and women group; Youth and Students Groups; NANS; ASKOMP and NUJ; Religious and Traditional Leaders; Transportation Workers; Political Groups; Non-Governmental Organizations; Security Agencies; Joint Assemblies; Community Development Associations; Igbo Community; Non-indigenous Groups; and Artisans groups amongst others.

In their separate responses, representative of Persons with disabilities; and the President, Kwara State Artisans Congress Alhaji Jimoh Adeshina applauded Honourable Muktar Shagaya for transforming legislative assignments and ensuring transparency and accountability.

We know the cost of a bag of rice in the market today. So, we thank the Federal and Hon. Muktar Shagaya for this initiative. We really appreciate Shagaya’s passion in improving the welfare of the citizenry,” Adeshina said.
“We are grateful to him for following the step of the federal government for this bold initiative. We’re very grateful.” Some beneficiaries took turns to commend the government for the palliatives.
